History
Year 2009 - The way forward..
* The Kutchi Bhanushali Seva Samaj Trust and Bhanu Youth Circle of Mumbai organizes blood donation camps and works on spreading awareness about Thalassemia (a genetic defect that results in reduced rate of synthesis of one of the globin chains that make up haemoglobin). We helped them propogate their blood donation events in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka through our SMS Platform. * We realized it was time to take this to the next level i.e; o Rope in regional and local volunteers across India (we received a number of requests to extend Kshan's operations outside Mumbai) o Get more donors registered in our network across India through publicity campaigns in malls, colleges and provision of registration using a simple SMS or online request o Set up full fledged operations to ensure each request for blood is verified before an SMS is sent out to the network
Year 2008 - Partnership with SmsGupshup.com
* We gained significant amount of popularity by 2008. We were featured in Hindustan Times, Times of India (Tribal Instincts), The Week's anniversary edition - The Indian Genius, Channel NEWS X, MUST FM (Mumbai Univeristy Students Transmission - an INFOTAINMENT channel by Mumbai University), Aapda Atithi section of All India Radio Gujrathi and Gujrathi magazine Chitralekha * We started receiving requests for blood from outside Mumbai which we could not help much with. We realized the need of a scalable infrastructure. * We approached smsGupshup - Indias largest and fastest growing mobile community platform in July 2008. They offered to sponsor all our messages thus reducing our mobile phone bills to a large extent and help us reach a much large set of potential donors efficiently. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between KSHAN and smsGupshup. * Our database increased from 400 to about 1700 potential donors and we moved up from 2-3 requests per week to almost 5-6 requests per week.
Year 2007 - From VIS to KSHAN
* We formed a group on meetup.com to increase our donor network. Things were slow. About 1 or 2 new members joined this group each month. * We realized that Vital Information Service was too long a name and it did not really define our work. So after considering about 50 odd names like Aashirvad and Tathastu, we finally chose KSHAN. The name defined the importance of the particular moment for a patient and mainly the relatives when there is a desperate need for help. KSHAN - EVERY MOMENT COUNTS, was born on 23-December-2007.
Year 2006 - The start of Vital Information Service (VIS)
Around mid-2006, Kiran Harwani (Kshan co-founder) had her father admitted in the hospital and she was looking for blood. A completely anonymous donor had already done the needful. This got us thinking. We decided to do something which would facilitate such anonymous blood donations. We started off by building a network of around 400 members (friends, acquaintances, professional circle) and whenever we were informed of an emergency, all these members were SMSed immediately with contact details of the patient's relative, who requested blood, blood group required and hospital. We acted as intermediaries, collecting information and passing it on. The blood donor would contact the patient's relative directly. This was the start of Vital Information Service (VIS) which featured in Bombay Times on November 4, 2006
